Choosing the right Wedding Photographer

When looking for a wedding photographer, most couples are not sure where to begin. Photographers are online, in magazines and at trade-shows, but how do you know who will be right for you and your wedding day? First step: Book at least three meetings with photographers whose work you love. Once you get to the meeting, here are some essentials that you should be looking for:

  1. Are they listening?
It’s the key element to having great photos you will love for years. If you’re photographer doesn’t “hear” that you want your formals on the beach at sunset, you most likely won’t get those images. Ask what they think of your ideas, make sure they are taking notes, and find out what their policy is about requesting specific images and last minute ideas. If they are unwilling to budge or don’t seem to be following the entire conversation, it may be time to move on.
  2. Do I connect and feel comfortable with them?
This is the one vendor you will be working with before, during and after your event, so you need to love them! Yes, the art is the part you will take home, but the experience of the person is what will influence how you feel about your images. Do they make you feel relaxed or more stressed out? Do you feel that they will take care of you on your wedding day as well as afterward? Make sure to bring along your fiancé, a parent or a trusted friend to get their opinion too!
  3. Do I love the style from start to finish?
The photos need to be amazing, but make sure you pay attention to how they are presented in the final album. The album is the feature you will carry to your family events and to friend’s homes to show off! Ask about cover styles, fabric and leather swatches and to see more than one finished album. This will allow you to see if your style and the photographer’s style can blend seamlessly and create the album of your dreams.
  4. Do they have referrals?
Back when you were single if you thought someone was cute but didn’t know them, what was the first thing you did? You asked someone who knew them! A good photographer will have past clients who are more than happy to tell everyone about their photographer. You should be able to get an email or phone number from your photographer that was ok’d with the client, and use it! Ask them what they liked, what they didn’t like, how long until they saw their images, how long until the album was ready, etc. Reliability is a major factor in your wedding day and you will know by either a lack of referrals or a lack of compliments if you should look elsewhere. If a photographer has met all of the above characteristics to your satisfaction, and then you may have found The One, but don’t be afraid to take some time and think about it. Your photos will be what you are looking at 25 years from now and you want to love them!
